A demonstration of the liquefaction of sand saturated with water when subjected to vibration. Arnaud Lemaistre, Science demonstrator in the Earth Sciences department at the Palais de la découverte, shows this effect by way of a model. Models are used to understand the effect of tilting on sandy or clayey soils, which has caused a number of disasters (for example the Mexico City earthquake in 1985).
Next, using another model, Arnaud Lemaistre explains the mechanics of rupture between two fault lines.
