Upon being awarded the 2015 CNRS Innovation Medal, Sylviane Muller takes a look back on her career. After joining the CNRS in 1981, she became the director of the immunopathology and therapeutic chemistry CNRS unit (Immunopathologie et chimie thérapeutique) in Strasbourg. In this laboratory the biologist born in 1952 discovered with her research team the therapeutic effect of P140 peptides on lupus. Lupus is a disease affecting 5 million patients in the world for which no specific drug treatment is available. Based on P140 peptide, a drug candidate was developed, Lupuzor. The statutory clinical trials carried out on 150 patients showed that the drug was well-tolerated and that it caused the symptoms at a level statistically far higher than placebo. Already a winner of a CNRS Silver Medal in 2009, Sylviane Muller has also filed 26 patent applications.
