Turkey is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. In August 2001, a team of French researchers on board the oceanographic vessel Marion Dufresne began to study the tectonic fault which runs under the sea of Marmara. Core samples 50 meters long were obtained using the vessel's equipment, and are used to study the last 100,000 years' worth of sediment. Past earthquakes are identified by the occurrence of disturbances in the column of sediment. The scientists thus demonstrate the cyclical development of earthquakes.
