Xavier Bonnet, a teacher-researcher and ethologist at the Centre d'Etudes Biologiques of Chizé (a CNRS laboratory), near Niort in the Vendée, is studying the reproduction strategies of vertebrates. He searches the countryside for vipers reaching the end of their hibernation period. The snakes are brought back to the laboratory, where they are weighed, measured, identified, and tagged; then any sufficiently large females are put into containers where mating will take place. These studies lead to a better understanding of the biology of snakes and thus to better management of the natural environment in order to preserve animal species diversity.
