Greece is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. Consequently, in 1998 a major European seismological observation project was initiated outside the small town of Aigion near Corinth: the Corinth Rift Laboratory. The purpose of this project, supported by the CNRS and the Institut de physique du globe in Paris, is to monitor very carefully a fault that is developing under Aigion.
