Rituals of spirit possession associated with the worship of the boson (nature spirits) are found throughout the Akan cultural regions of the Ivory Coast and Ghana. The officiants, called komian, perform the functions of soothsayer, healer, and possessed person during these rituals, which take place inside a circle drawn with kaolin (white clay).
The rituals presented here in eight sequences, each one centered on one principal individual, were held between December 15, 2001 and January 20, 2002 in Kangandi in the Anyi region of the southeastern Ivory Coast.
