Of wolves and men

In the last few years wolves have returned to the French Alps. Protected by the Bern Convention, they are now sacrosanct and have thus become a source of conflict between sheep farmers and ecologists.
No doubt originally an immigrant from Italy, the wolf is to be found in the Mercantour national park in the Alpes Maritimes, in an area where the extensive breeding of ewes has facilitated its appearance. The immense herds of sheep, which are difficult to supervise continuously, are regularly attacked and the powerless shepherds can only report the damage done.
To try to reconcile the survival of a protected species with the area's economic interests, Italian and French scientists seek to understand the way of life of this formidable carnivore.
In spite of the conflict, coexistence is being established. A LIFE program (Living in a Finite Environment - Management and conservation of the environment in Europe) was set up for the wolves. The mayor of Saint-Martin Vésubie is planning to create a "House of the wolf" to attract tourists. In the park of Queyras, a project for setting up radio contact between shepherds at high altitudes is being instituted.
