The first test-tube baby in France was born in 1982. Since then, the progress of medically assisted conception has been extraordinary, and now every stage of human reproduction can be replicated in the laboratory. The national Consultative Committee for ethics in the health and life sciences is thus led to raise the question of how and how far we should satisfy sterile couples' desire for a child.
Presentations by members of the ethics committee are interspersed with descriptions of the techniques of medical conception: intra-uterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization, and direct injection of the spermatozoon into the oocyte.
