Barbara Demeneix is a biologist and the Director of the Department of molecular Regulation, development and diversity (Régulations, développement et diversité moléculaire (1)) at the national museum of natural history in Paris (Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle - MNHN). As a hormone specialist, Demeneix has developed innovative methods for the in vivo detection of environmental pollutants. What is her leading edge achievement? Transgenic tadpoles that glow in the presence of endocrine disrupting pollutants. "While conventional chemical analysis can only measure a few predefined substances, these biomarkers take into account the cocktail effect of all pollutants found in water,"she points out. On the occasion of her innovation medal 2014, awarded by the CNRS, she describes her research.
