Traditional societies perform rites of passage to celebrate the transformation of the child into an adult. Parallels are proposed between the initiatory rites of traditional peoples and the phenomena of metamorphosis (piercings, tattooing, or body sculpture) practiced by young people in the West.
Observations and analyses by anthropologist Maurice Godelier, ethnologist and psychologist Lorenzo Brutti, and sociologist David Le Breton are presented together throughout the film.
